Tras el “paseo” de Michael por el extremo Sur de Cuba, las aguas van tomando su nivel en la costa sur, aunque en Surgidero de Batabanó estas parecen demorar más días y quizá semanas en algunas de sus calles.
En un recorrido por las zonas inundadas de ese enclave costero y según la experiencia de la población, percibimos que en esos lugares buena parte del mar quedó atrapada debido a los obstáculos que presentan desde hace años la llamada zanja y los canales.
Sin embargo, no hubo daños materiales ni humanos, gracias a las medidas preventivas adoptadas por las autoridades del municipio y el apoyo de los pobladores, más de 100 de ellos evacuados en viviendas más seguras del vecindario.
En la Empresa Pesquera Industrial se aplicó el plan previsto en situaciones como esta, entre las cuales figuran el atraque de sus 62 embarcaciones en el canal de refugio y resguardo de todos los recursos, a fin de preservarlos de los fuertes vientos y las lluvias.
Cerca de allí, los trabajadores del puerto aseguraron con fuertes amarras las dos patanas y la potente grúa existentes en el muelle. También pusieron a buen recaudo el fertilizante que habían descargado, hacia un lugar más seguro y todos los contenedores contentivos de diferentes mercancías, lo cual evitó afectaciones.
En sentido general no hubo daños a la actividad económica en Surgidero, las redes eléctricas y telefónicas. Solo resta esperar a que las aguas vuelvan a su cauce anterior y los evacuados a sus respectivas casas.

After Michael’s «walk» through the extreme south of Cuba, the waters are taking their level in the south coast, although in Surgidero de Batabanó these seem to take more days and perhaps weeks in some of its streets.
On a tour of the flooded areas of this coastal enclave and according to the experience of the population, we perceived that in these places a good part of the sea was trapped due to the obstacles that the so-called ditch and canals have presented for years.
However, there was no material or human damage, thanks to preventive measures taken by the municipal authorities and the support of the residents, more than 100 of them evacuated into safer houses in the neighborhood.
In the Industrial Fishing Company the plan was applied in situations like this, among which are the berthing of its 62 boats in the channel of refuge and shelter of all resources, in order to preserve them from strong winds and rains.
Nearby, the port workers secured with strong moorings the two patanas and the powerful crane on the dock. They also secured the fertilizer they had unloaded, towards a safer place and all the containers containing different goods, which avoided any damage.
In a general sense, there was no damage to the economic activity in Surgidero, the electrical and telephone networks. All that remains is to wait for the waters to return to their previous course and the evacuees to their respective houses.
